A map for Gaza

[EN] If you erase it, we will draw it.
I was invited to participate in the action #AmapforGaza (@amapforgaza), a collaborative project involving map illustrators from around the world. The project consists of creating a collection of maps of the Gaza Strip as a show of support and as a tribute to the territory that is being destroyed and the people who live there.

A ação consiste na criação de uma coleção de mapas da Faixa de Gaza como demonstração de apoio e como homenagem ao território que está sendo destruído e às pessoas da região.

[EN] The creative process to develop this map involved a huge dedication to researching and learning more about the Gaza Strip, which allowed me to see a completely different side to what I have seen in the news. I was able to immerse myself in its culture, architecture and beautiful region, which was terribly devastated during the conflict. Noticing the contrast between fragments of a normal life, where people went about their lives (visiting mosques and museums, growing fruits and flowers, going to university, enjoying beaches, parks and gardens) and watching the painful massacre that is happening to civilians and The destruction of their territory devastates my heart and causes me a feeling of great sadness and pain.

[PT-BR] O processo criativo para desenvolver esse mapa envolveu uma enorme dedicação em pesquisar e aprender mais sobre a Faixa de Gaza, o que me proporcionou conhecer um lado completamente diferente do que eu tenho acompanhado nos noticiários. Pude fazer uma imersão em sua cultura, arquitetura e em sua bela região que foi terrivelmente devastada ao longo do conflito. Perceber o contraste entre fragmentos de uma vida normal, onde pessoas levavam suas vidas (visitando mesquitas e museus, cultivando frutas e flores, indo à universidade, desfrutando das praias, parques e jardins) e assistir o doloroso massacre que está acontecendo com os civis e a destruição do seu território, arrasa o meu coração e me causa um sentimento de muita tristeza e revolta.

[EN] With this map, I wanted to represent all the beauty that used to exist in this region and the richness of its culture, bringing to light what Gaza used to be. Learning about the history of this place, identifying historical buildings, observing its citizens and creating each element individually to later put them together in a creative composition within the map format, was something very rich for me as an artist and as a person. I dedicate all my solidarity and empathy to civilians and pray for an immediate ceasefire so that people can rebuild and live with dignity.

[PT-BR] Nesse mapa, busquei representar toda a beleza que costumava existir nessa região e a riqueza de sua cultura, trazendo à luz o que Gaza costumava ser. Aprender sobre a história desse lugar, identificar construções históricas, observar os seus cidadãos e criar cada elemento isoladamente para, posteriormente, juntá-los em uma composição criativa dentro do formato de mapa, foi algo muito enriquecedor para mim como artista e como pessoa. Dedico toda a minha solidariedade e empatia aos civis e rezo por um cessar-fogo imediato para que as pessoas possam se reconstruir e viver com dignidade.
